Introducing The Becoming Coachable Miniseries
August 3, 2023“I was not always coachable.”
Counterintuitive words from someone who has made the integrity of executive coaching his life’s work, no? And yet, they are the first words from the introduction of our new book, Becoming Coachable: Unleashing the Power of Executive Coaching to Transform Your Leadership and Life.
Over the next 10 Thursdays leading up to and beyond Becoming Coachable’s official publication on September 19 by Amplify Publishing Group, I’ll be publishing a series of excerpts and insights into the book’s foundational principles, in the hopes of inspiring you to lead with a little more openness, vulnerability, and compassion for yourself and your organization.
The thing is, there are plenty of books that guide readers on how to be good leaders and coaches. But there are relatively few that show readers how to be good receivers—in other words, how to be coachable. It’s cyclical: becoming coachable breeds strong leadership, and strong leaders know they must remain coachable at all walks of life, regardless of how successful they become. While it’s imperative to have a good coach on your side, that is only one part of the equation. If someone wants to get the most out of coaching, grow maximally in their leadership, and boost their impact and fulfillment, the first step is to know how to look inward. Becoming Coachable covers all of the above.
The process of becoming coachable is like riding a wave, and I’ve had the privilege of holding steady from far-out waters all the way to shore. It’s my own experience with the coaching process (and seeing its results firsthand) that inspired my role in the writing of this book, and I can’t wait to share our stories, perspectives, and years of coaching experience with you all.
I wrote this book along with two of my most dearest friends and collaborators, and I could not be more grateful: Jacquelyn Lane, president of the 100 Coaches Agency and beloved pillar of the community, and Marshall Goldsmith, founder of The Marshall Goldsmith 100 Coaches Community Page, #1 executive coach in the world, and an inspiration to millions of people from near and far. Plus, we enlisted the stories and insights from the 100 Coaches community and have distilled centuries of coaching insight into a few hundred pages.
The book begins by preparing leaders for the process of betterment, starting with investing in yourself in order to give the most back to your organization, team, and the world. The book identifies key leadership archetypes and unpacks the intricacies of a typical engagement. It demystifies the coaching relationship and outlines a framework that hinges on the openness integral to reaping the most from such an experience.
But at its core, this book is a call to action. It’s an invitation to leaders from all walks of life to look within at each step, to prioritize the collective good, to see the value in relationships as opposed to transactions, and to lift each other up in the name of unbridled growth. Moment to moment, a rising tide is invisible to the eye. But leave the shore and come back a few hours later, and you’ll be able to see the monumental shift that has happened across the coastline. That is the power of the coachable.
Much like the coaching process, and, well, life, the writing and production of this book has been a journey in collaboration. And now, we embark on the most exciting part of it all: Sharing it with the world. We can’t wait to hear from the coaches it touches and the leaders it inspires.
I hope you’ll join me in celebrating this special chapter of ours by sharing the newsletters that resonate with you to your larger audience and spreading the word of Becoming Coachable far and wide.
Your partnership in this launch is what will make all the difference. We can already feel the tide rising.
With love, gratitude, and wonder,
Scott, Marshall, & Jacquelyn
